Grove House Hospice visit

On Wednesday, 30th April, the ladies from Saheli Day Centre had the wonderful opportunity to visit Grove House Hospice in St Albans. We had the chance to meet their team, who kindly took the time to discuss their roles and the invaluable support they provide to the community

Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care, which includes Grove House in St Albans, provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care for adults diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses. Their support is delivered at home, in the community, and through day services, helping patients live as well as possible for as long as possible. With other branches and teams operating across Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, including Watford and Tring, their services reach thousands of people each year. They offer everything from clinical care to emotional, spiritual, and practical support—for both patients and their families.

The care provided by Grove House Hospice is completely free for patients — there’s no charge at all. We were amazed to learn that only 14% of their funding comes from the government. The remaining 86% is raised through charitable donations and community support. Truly inspiring work!

If you or someone you know could benefit from their services, your GP can refer you, or you can self-refer directly.

During our visit, Grove House Hospice shared that they are keen to understand why many Asian families may be reluctant to ask for help with care. They are aware that cultural values around family responsibility and care can sometimes lead to carers, feeling that accepting outside help is a sign of failure or letting their loved ones down.
The Hospice wants to reassure families that their role is not to take over but to support them. They aim to work alongside carers, offering help where needed so that families can continue to care with the added support, guidance, and resources that make the journey more manageable.
We were treated to a tour of their beautiful, peaceful garden, which our ladies absolutely loved!

We’re truly inspired by the incredible work they do for the community, and we look forward to raising funds for this amazing cause in the future through our club activities. If you have any ideas for ways we can help raise money for this amazing cause, we’d love to hear them!

We will also be arranging a visit so they can come to our club to share more information about their services. We’ll keep you posted on the details soon.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for this special visit.
